Episode 36 - David I & The Church
Friday Sep 29, 2023
Friday Sep 29, 2023
Hello everyone and welcome to the History of Scotland, Episode 36.
Today's episode we pivot our focus slightly. While David I's changes were sweeping, covering facets from governance to law, one area stands out for its significant transformation: the Scottish Church. The church, as we'll soon discover, was a cornerstone of medieval life. It held sway not just over the souls of the people but often over their daily lives and governance as well.
David's reign saw a tectonic shift in how the church functioned in Scotland. But to truly appreciate the magnitude of his reforms, we need to first understand what the church was like before his ascent to the throne. How did the church influence daily life? What were its ties to the broader European ecclesiastical world? And how did it intertwine with the rule of kings and nobility?

Friday Sep 15, 2023
Hello everyone and welcome to the History of Scotland, Episode 35.
Today's episode we are shifting the lens from the public to the private and then, dramatically, back to the public but in a different way. First, we will zoom in on the family life of David I.
Who stood beside this powerful man? What was the royal household like? Were his children chips off the old block?
Understanding the personal life of David I adds layers of nuance to the portrait of this great king and sheds light on how personal matters influenced state affairs.
But hold onto your hats because following that, we’re switching gears to discuss something monumental—yes, it’s the Davidian Revolution.
Get ready for a deep dive into this transformative period, because understanding the Davidian Revolution is tantamount to understanding the very framework of modern Scotland.
This wasn’t just a regime change or a few tweaks here and there. This was a foundational shift that transformed the culture, law, and governance of Scotland in ways that have stood the test of time.
We'll discuss its roots, its effects, and its legacy—believe me, you don't want to miss this!

Episode 30 - Scotland & The Crusades
Saturday Oct 22, 2022
Saturday Oct 22, 2022
Hello everyone and welcome to the History of Scotland, Episode 30.
Now today we are going to end our three part series discussing Scotland’s participation in the Crusades as a whole. Learning about what role the Nation of our beloved Scotland played during these calls for war in the Holy Land as well as their relationship with the Knights Templar.
Although there were Scottish crusaders involved in every war, their influence and numbers were not notable, largely because of their concern that the English kings would syphon off Scottish taxes for the crusades for their own purposes, and because they were often at war with the English later on.
One main paper we are going to use and reference throughout this episode is THE INFLUENCE Of’ THE CRUSADES & THE CONTEMPORARY RELIGIOUS LIFE IN SCOTLAND from the University of Glasgow. For any further reading you wish to make after this episode.
So let's dive one last time into the Crusades and learn about Scotland's influence and participation in these holy wars.

Episode 29 - The True story of the First Crusade
Wednesday Oct 12, 2022
Wednesday Oct 12, 2022
Hello everyone and welcome to the History of Scotland, Episode 29.
Now rather than dwindle on anything out of podcast related this week I want us to get straight back into the action since this episode I want to tell the story of the actual “First Crusade” from start to finish.
So with that in mind and with this episode most likely being a long one lets get started.
We head back to Europe where the Princes of Europe are gathering to march on the Holy Land with an army of Holy Knights, with an actual plan, which is different from the pilgrims that Peter the Hermit led in the past episode.
So ladies and gentlemen, let's Deus vult ourselves back to medieval europe!

Episode 28 - The People’s Crusade
Saturday Sep 24, 2022
Saturday Sep 24, 2022
Hello everyone and welcome to the History of Scotland, Episode 28.
Now rather than move our story swiftly to Alexander I, I have decided I want to tell the tale of the First Crusade as it's a giant moment in medieval history and a tale I really would like to tell.
So please indulge me whilst I begin this tale and I promise we will return back to our story after this three part special.
In today's episode we begin the first part of our tale, “The People's Crusade”. The rather less known story of the First Crusade, a story’s conclusion that nearly derailed the entire First Crusade before it ever properly began.
So let us begin with the return back to the Council of Clermont in 1095.
